Once again, to mark what would have been showtime, Spirit of Gravity is continuing to pump out the strange and unusual sounds via a netlabel release. This time around it is Cookie with with the Man-tra EP.
Cookie is Mike Cook, originally from Cleethorpes, who was part of the band Planet Cook in the late 80s and early 90s. ‘Phantom’, from the Magic Roundabout EP, was among the records aired by the likes of Andrew Weatherall and John Peel. After Planet Cook collapsed Mike continued releasing records and remixing, and partnered with the DJ Mickey Vespre to release under moniker The Medicine Cabinet.
In the mid 90s, bored with ‘the biz’, Cookie put his studio into cold storage and joined a brass band, starting a lifelong quest to improve as a brass musician. The process is ongoing. He also produced a track for the SoG released Shitmat Reconstructed CD.
Fast forward to 2020 and with brass bands forced into virus-related hibernation it was time to start exploring electronic/brass hybrid music again. The moody and melancholy results are showcased on this EP.
