Gravity Waves and the Spirit World

The next edition of the Spirit of Gravity radio show will be broadcast on Thursday 23rd February from 8.00 to 10.00pm on ResonanceExtra FM.

Gravity Waves

The first hour will be dedicated to the various sonic works made by the enigma that is Mr Chriddof. For years he has been making surreal and fantastic YouTube videos that blend infantile toilet humour, deep knowledge of historical avant-garde film, DIY software processing accidents and extensive use of 80’s and 90’s British television broadcast archives. Here we present a mix of ripped soundtracks and purely musical Chriddof endeavours. It all adds up to a truly strange and captivating body of work. Mr Chriddof, we salute you!

2nd February at the Green Door Store: Slow Listener / PSK / D503

Rasping tones and full strength drones from Brighton and beyond

Slow Listener
Robin Dickinson blends a sensitive ear for decomposing drones (think an atonal William Basinski) with a keen understanding of musique concrète and noise. Recently he’s been moving away from grubbed up field recordings and tapes into more synthetic, tonal areas.

PSK
Kev Hough, Steve Psylon and Rock Sizemore: An ill judged Surrealist Electronica from three towering figures of the Worthing underground.
www.facebook.com/PSKband

D503
An Italian duo based in London: Francesco Garau, manipulated guitars, and Nicola Serra, bass synth and rhythmic. Their music aims to explore dark, cold and abstract territories under the umbrella of a variety of genres such as drone, industrial, techno and ambient, by using primitive, minimal and repetitive sounds.

COMING SOON
The Spirit of Gravity at the Green Door Store Thursday 2nd March: Clive Henry / Feed Back Cell / Gagarin

The latest release on the Spirit of Gravity label documents a beautiful and unique live collaboration
between the traditional Indian instrumentalists of The Music of Benares and the electronic
soundmakers of The Spirit of Gravity.

The album is available for audition and as a pay-what-you want download on the label’s page:
spiritofgravity.bandcamp.com/album/music-of-benares-in-brighton

On 8 November 2015, sitarists Pandit Shivnath Mishra and Deobrat Mishra, together with tabla player Prashant Mishra – three generations of the same family from Benares, northern India – played a sold-out concert at the Dome studio. Two fusion pieces – performed that evening with the Spirit of Gravity collective’s Geoff Reader, Andrew Greaves and Howard Spencer – are presented on this album, along with four improvisations from a session at Bird Studios the previous day.

The Mishras tour Europe every year but had never previously visited the UK. The collaboration was facilitated by Spirit of Gravity Life President Chris Cook, and the resulting intertwining of subtle synth drones and wash was recorded and filmed by collective members Dan Powell and by Sarah Nelson at the Dome.

“It was great opportunity to perform for the first time in the UK in 2015 – we had some great memories of performing with local musicians and having great cultural exchange with the music” says Deobrat Mishra.

Tear open your fuzzy xmas-head and cram the burning sounds of SoG into the very cortex of your New Year

Meshmass
Single use music; Saxophone, guitar, electrics.
Meshmass make single use music. Whatever we do, no matter how complex – no matter what pre-prepared material is involved – is played only this once and whatever you hear has never been heard before and will never be played again. There is no ‘rehearsal’. There is no ‘practice’. There is no second chance. There is only play. Tucked up tight to the ruthless edge of now, it is meshmass. Constant music, instant music, just add ears.

The Zero Map
Psychedelic drone duo (+ a bit)
Given two additive groups (or rings, or modules, or vector spaces) A and B, the map f:A–>B such that f(a)=0 for all a in A is called the zero map. It is a homomorphism in the category of groups (or rings or modules or vector spaces). The Zero Map are a duo from Brighton

1st December at the Green Door Store: Johanna Bramli / Cutlasses / I’m Dr Buoyant and Ron Caines

Johanna Bramli
Manipulated vocals / electronics / drone / found sounds

Johanna blends found sounds, drones, DIY noise devices, and harmonised vocals to create melodic, dreamy yet haunting soundscapes. She is one half of motorik pop band Fröst and is interested in exploring the gap between experimental noise and pop. In her solo work, she attempts to bring elements of melodic and pop structures to experimental sounds and textures.

Cutlasses
Homemade electronics & horror timbres with melody

Cutlasses is the solo project of Scott Pitkethly. Combining field recordings and found sounds with heavily manipulated guitar and synths, Cutlasses takes its inspiration from the textures and timbres of sound art and horror film soundtracks, whilst also drawing from the melodic sensibilities of pop music. As well as making music, Scott is also an avid maker of DIY electronic instruments and effects, some of which will make it into the live show.

I’m Dr Buoyant and Ron Caines
Return of the sax and loop improv duo

I’m Dr Buoyant and Ron Caines return for a rare outing of their unique combination of live-sampled loops and improvised sax, ranging from the lyrical to the downright gnarly. I’m Dr Buoyant is a founder member of the Spirit of Gravity collective, while Ron Caines, of 70’s prog fame with East of Eden, appears in regular improv duos with the likes of Andy Pyne and Alice Eldridge, and is a member of the Westhill Blast Quartet. I’m Dr Buoyant recently released a full-length album of electronic manipulations of Ron’s saxophone recordings on the Spirit of Gravity BandCamp label, “I’m Dr Buoyant plays Ron Caines”.

Gravity Waves
The entire first hour is given over to a sound piece called ‘SOG Underscore’ by Caleb Madden And Geoff Reader. The work consists of 4 recordings taken from the output of a de-tuned analogue radio at 4 different frequencies. The recordings were made whilst driving around Brighton in a car following a route which was decided by writing 3 large letters (S,O,G) on a map of Brighton and then trying to drive as closely as possible to the outline. The route home along the straight line of the seafront underlined the letters nicely.

The Spirit World
Steve Gisby – Incremental Music “One”
Some Some Unicorn – The Golden Periphery “A haunting song of thirst”
Noisferatu – Thee Radish Trinity
Keith Seatman – CDR034 Track 2
Geoff Reader – Alvin Lucier’s I am Sitting in a room – Radio Version
Various artists – Oxjam Rosehill collage

3rd November at the Green Door Store: Timeron / Noisferatu / Isn’tses

sog-nov-16

Timeron
Analogue Tramlines session all synth action

Timeron has decided to limit their possibilities using, as as a core, real-time non binary oscillations. Polyphony is less, samples craved. dodgy palette. The space in the box is important, feeding live sonic transmissions of air apparent electricity. the body speaks, those given voices speak from a vantage point suspended by a stale disbelief. Let it be known, Slick Rick has made it clear he wants absolutely no gaps or cracks. business stress.
He has always been a source of amusement throughout history. Why do these taste-makers exist? Time to step cautiously, no funky stuff, no guff.

Back to the plan, the sequencer styled 90’s. It doesn’t care about its groovy font…just an old worker. punch in the data, midi streams for clunky human expressions. ‘why are you doing that?’ says RM1x. T: ‘maybe to talk of some place in the mind lost or forgotten’ . R: ‘but in doing so you lose. with such repeats. the fleeting emotion that empowers is lost’ T: ‘ true, anyway all that rich analogue data is barely perceptible, by the time its shat out of a Microsoft’ R: ‘ are you suggesting that nothing can be communicated through these midi mutterings I am sending to those oscillators?’ T: ‘ I like your buttons’

Noisferatu
All Hail thee Radish: invocation

Noisferatu are a masked duo who have urged audiences to Hail Thee Radish in their dark sonic occult rituals. These rituals are improvised journeys filled with darkly absurd imagery and veneration of thee radish. Live the rituals feature radishes, incense, chalk sigils (often crude an vaguely obscene) and guest performers (guitarists, sound manipulators, dancers, Rappers, vocalists, percussionists). Thee rituals always last 666 seconds. ALL HAIL THEE RADISH!!
