18th March at the Scope: Nad Spiro / Leo Chadburn / Freedom Frampton

The Spirit of Gravity presents the Scope VIII

Scope Mar 15

Nad Spiro
Electronic textures and sound fiction

Underground musician Rosa Arruti has worked for many years under the anonymous alias NAD SPIRO, a solo venture where complex processed guitars are built into a world of electronic textures and sound fictions. Her recordings have been released on the pioneering Spanish experimental label GEOMETRIK RECORDS.
Member of some of Barcelona’s cult underground bands (MohoChemie, Tendre Tembles, Psicópatas del Norte.) she has collaborated with other experimentalists like Kim Cascone or My Cat is an Alien.

Leo Chadburn
Music with surprising and unusual words

Composer and vocalist Leo Chadburn (AKA Simon Bookish) presents an evening of music with surprising and unusual words, ranging from floating dreamscapes, haunting descriptions of imaginary places and mangled poetry.
Featuring song, spoken word and lo-fi electronics, and including rarely-heard experimental music by composers including Peter Ablinger, Travis Just and Jennifer Walshe alongside Chadburn’s own left-field pop aesthetic, the evening aims to invoke a kind of surreal “film for the ears.”

Freedom Frampton
Minimal condensation of the intensity of living

Mixing a cappella with minimal backing on phone and drum machine, Freedom Frampton condenses the intensity of living through this life.

Warrior Squares
Improvising groove monsters with a tree and a former Henry Cow

Warrior Squares have just finished recording their debut album (at last!) and we’re looking forward to hosting them in the intimacy of The Caroline of Brunswick. Since the last time they played for us Geoff Leigh has picked up the Soprano sax again. And there is a good chance of tree based improvisations.

DA[FS] is a PhD project exploring the recreation of relational, participatory, emergent, and gestural processes, via the implementation of non-linear text scores. It is currently being performed upon a modular synthesiser.

5th February at the Green Door Store: Olivia Louvel / The Organ Grinder’s Monkey / Inwards

Spirit of Gravity pop night

Guards! Guards! were originally booked for this night, but can no longer make it, I’m afraid, so we’ve booked:

Inwards
Acre Recordings/BRVFCE recordings Live electronic analog performance

A childlike soundworld hides a slightly unnerving, psychedelic undertone, simultaneously pleasing restless feet and hazy minds.

Olivia Louvel
Electronic art pop

Olivia Louvel is a French-born, British composer, producer and performer, crafting electronic songs with laptop and voice. She works on the frontier of art and electronic music, often blurring the boundary between the two. Her innovative and quirky songwriting brought her to recently open for Planningtorock at the earsthetic Festival and also for The Irrepressibles, both at the Brighton Dome.

In 2011, she won the album of the year at the Qwartz Electronic Music Awards for ‘Doll Divider’, her third album. ‘Doll Divider’ was derived from A4 paintings which she made using pages from fashion magazines and repainting on top of the photos of the models. Collectively these paintings are called ‘Processed Dolls’.
Her previous production ‘ō, music for haiku’, based on haiku by poet Bashō (1644-1694), was released in December 2012. ‘o, music for haiku’ was nominated for the Prix Ars Electronica 2013.

In 2014, she released ‘Beauty Sleep’, 11 songs complemented by a series of experimental short films shot in West Sussex, reinventing herself as a bird-woman.

Electronic Sound
“The award-winning French-born Brit crafts a fresh set of art inspired electronics. Or is it electronics inspired art? Olivia Louvel works on the frontier of art and electronic music, often blurring the boundary between the two.”

The Organ Grinder’s Monkey
Mutant guitar-pop-electro-glitch hybrid

Reminding us of mid period Eno: shimmering guitar, tricky beats and a keenness to go the extra yard and overload everything with effects – his last show involved handing out a joystick to audience members to apply random filter to his songs.

duck-rabbit
Electro-acoustic trickster trio

duck-rabbit explore two contrasting and overlapping personalities, one acoustic, one electronic. Using unique electronic instruments, they interact with their acoustic improvisations. This interaction creates an absorbing interplay between past and present, a constant reimagining of ideas within an expanded sonic terrain.

Duncan Harrison
The missing link between Bernard Heidsieck and Bruce Dickinson

Duncan Harrison says: “I used to have terrifying recurring nightmares in my childhood in which Ronald McDonald would enter my house and climb the stairs at an agonisingly slow pace before tickling me in my bed and leaving. I was a victim of these nightmares on and off until aged around 10 when I finally fought and killed him in one last explosive episode of these dreams. Having stabbed him deeply in the sternum with my Father’s red handled bread knife, I watched him transform into a withered and extremely aged version of himself. He apologised for all the past intrusions he’d made into my life and said he only did it to support his family. I forgave him and he disappeared.
18 years on, I have yet to dream of Ronald McDonald again, though I am certain when my time comes to die it will be at the hands of his vengeful, orphaned son.”

Laboratoro
“Ghosts of WWII Bunkers” Installation

Laboratoro present new work that involves transporting the invisible ghosts of some WWII bunkers to the Caroline of Brunswick for a live performance/ installation. Expect artificial acoustic spaces, noise, movement and five black mirrors.
When they played at the GDS for us it was described as “The oddest thing I’ve ever seen… even here”.

Ripsaw Catfish shoaling with Static Memories

Ripsaw Catfish is Anton Hunter (guitar) and Cath Roberts (baritone saxophone). The Manchester and London-based duo formed in 2013 to explore improvised and composed music, and whatever lies between those things. They employ a collection of pre-composed elements which can be drawn upon, or not, during the course of an improvisation.

In Autumn 2014 they are embarking on a UK tour with a collaborative focus. The duo will assemble ad hoc ensembles (‘shoals’) of improvising musicians from each location to play spontaneous sets of new music informed by, incorporating or ignoring the Ripsaw Catfish composed material.

Tourian

Nyogotha

Brought into being in 2007, Nyogotha is a project in the creation of introspective soundscapes and meditative ambience that recreates the experience of being in nothingness. Inspired by the minimalism of Sunn O))) and Skepticism in consort with the psychedelic sounds of Hawkwind and Lycia, Nyogtha seeks to bring together Doom and Shoegaze so as to take the listener on a journey into the void.

Idiot Drone Farm in an Idiot Drone Off

Making their Début for The Spirit of Gravity, long time collective members formed IDF last year and will go head to head in a major league drone off. Hopefully with B-Boy jeering and rabble rousing antics.
“All the drone-heads in the house go “HmmMMMmmm!”

Cymagick demo

Cymagick describes a practice consisting of : study of Vibratory Phenomena, Mystical Experience and Creative Expression.
The term is derived from Cymatics – the science of visualisation of sound, and is composed of the words Kyma which is Greek for wave and magick, with a ‘k’ to mark it’s esoteric tradition and occult leanings and to differentiate it from stage magic. Cymagick is insight into the vibratory nature of all things and shows some of the mesmerising invisible correlations between worlds seen and unseen. It bears profound metaphysical implications which often provoke strong physical, mental and spiritual effects in the manipulator and spectator alike…
